Alessandro Treves: Thinking through fragments of meaning and nonsense

Cognitive Neuroscience, SISSA, Trieste, Italy

Creative thought has been largely outside the scope of scientific attempts to analyze information processing by the brain. Now, artificial intelligence is giving us the option of partially subcontracting creativity to content generators like GPT-3 or DALL-E. To me, that reinforces the motivation to understand how free-wheeling thought processes are rooted in memory and in the organization of the cerebral cortex and its connected structures. I will discuss a few divergent steps towards this goal.
