The Statistical Physics of Data Assimilation and Machine Learning

We discuss an equivalence between machine learning and data assimliation in the physical and biological sciences. This equivalence allows
us to cast both toopics in a comprehensive framework where they appear as statistical physics problems. Using this we utilize methods from data assimilation to enhance understanding in machine learning and, looking at the connection the other way, suggest uses of machine learning advances in data assimilation questions.
