Julijana Gjorgjieva: Shaping cortical computations via short- and long-term synaptic plasticity
Technische Universität München
Synapses and neuronal properties in the brain are constantly modified by various plasticity mechanisms operating at different timescales. While extensive experimental studies have characterized these plasticity mechanisms, understanding their functional implications purely experimentally is challenging due to their interplay, and the complexity induced by the diversity of cell types. Combining theoretical analysis and computational modeling, I will show how different plasticity mechanisms refine connectivity and shape cortical computations. I will present our work on synaptic plasticity organizing circuits at the subcellualr and cellular levels, and homeostatic mechanisms maintaining stability in neural circuits enabling them to perform different computations.
